Combining Movement with Community Service at Turner Elementary
Students and teachers are truly passionate about physical activity at Turner Elementary in Washington, DC. Turner is one of the few campuses in the District of Columbia that has two Physical Education teacher every day. This allows students to have 1-2 physical education classes per week, where some schools only have PE bi-weekly. Turner also has recess daily for every grade and encourages movement breaks throughout the school day.
“During morning meeting we have incorporated a number of Just Dance videos so students can start off their morning in a great mood and burn off a little energy to get ready for the school day,” said Abigail “Coach Abby” McPherson, Health and Physical Education Teacher at Turner.
Coach Abby first heard about the Fire Up Your Feet Challenge through Turner’s BOKS coordinator, Ms. Akpan. After looking at the requirements she decided it was worth a try.
“We tracked out BOKS morning movement program. PE classes, Recess and out out of school time sports such as DC Scores, Flag Football and Basketball. Our students are always excited to be moving around. This year we did something special for the students and our school community – we had a day of service that included a 1/2 mile walk as well as little service project around our school building like trash pick up and graffiti removal. It was an excellent day that had everyone excited to plan and participate in future events like it,” said Coach Abby.
Being involved in the Fire Up Your Feet Challenge even helped some students and teachers overcome personal challenges to being active. “ Quite a few teacher and students we concerned about the walk we had and claimed that it was "too far" or "too hot" but once they started walking and seeing the students and teachers enjoying themselves all their concerns melted away,” said Coach Abby.
The Fire Up Your Feet team extends a big high five to Turner students, families, and teachers for winning Second Place and the Activity All-Star prizes during the Spring Challenge!
