Elk Meadow Elementary Walks and Bikes to a Win
As a school that values wellness, Elk Meadow Elementary has been a great fit for the Fire Up Your Feet program. “It has fired up not just our feet but, our entire body of wellness initiatives!” says Grant Mattox, the school’s P. E. teacher.
In addition to helping raise awareness about the need to be active, the program also shows a clear and relatively simply way to attack the problem of inactivity. “By energizing our entire school to be more active in little ways throughout the day, we believe more of our students are achieving the daily goal of 60 minutes of moderate/vigorous activity,” said Mr. Mattox.

This October, Fire Up Your Feet was a powerful force behind El Meadow’s activities during a month when the school community is focused on being more active. Fire Up Your Feet helped kick up the number of students and family members involved in October 7 Walk + Bike to School Day and the October 4th Great Pumpkin Run.
Elk Meadow also hosted Fitness Week involving dance, yoga, and a wacky walk/run. And, thanks to their designation as a Let’s Move! Active School, students received a visit from Olympian Laurenne Ross.
“Fire Up Your Feet has helped us bring parents on board with our efforts to increase physical activity, and has even helped convince our PTO to use a jog-a-thon and a community fun run as the primary school fundraisers,” said Mr. Mattox.
“With Fire Up Your Feet programs bookending our school year in the fall and spring, motivation can be maintained at a high level throughout the school year. In addition to having the program as a foundational piece of our school’s wellness efforts, we’re also proud to have received Challenge Awards that have given us the ability to provide incentives to add an exciting and motivational element for our school community,” he said.
Fire Up Your Feet and Walk+Bike Day have become permanent fixtures as one of the many wellness activities Elk Meadow includes to encourage well-rounded students and greater school community.
Congratulations to Elk Meadow Elementary for winning the second place award in Oregon as well as the national PeopleForBikes award!
Special thanks to Kaiser Permanente for supporting the Fire Up Your Feet Challenge in Oregon.
