KIPP DC – Heights Academy Takes Home First Place
Now that the students have space to walk, run, jump, and play, there’s no dampening their enthusiasm for physical activity. That’s why Heights Academy physical education teacher Jonathan McSwain is proud to have led his school to first place in the Fire Up Your Feet Spring Activity Challenge for the second year in a row.
Mr. McSwain starts every gym class with 8-10 minutes of walking around a track that he designed in his portion of the gym. He says students appreciate the routine and the time to calm down while being active. After calmly and safely walking around the track, the students move onto the activity of the day.
The cash awards that Heights Academy has earned from Fire Up Your Feet in previous challenges have helped Mr. McSwain purchase equipment and sports gear so the students can take full advantage of their new space. He says the benefits of having a gym and equipment go beyond health – being active also helps boost students’ confidence.
“Once students finish their walk, they feel great and excited for the next activity in class” said McSwain. “Every time they accomplish a new fitness goal, they know they can go even further the next time.”
