Lakeside Middle School Champions Win Red Ribbons AND Gold Stars!
Thanks to the energy and momentum from the Fire Up Your Feet program, we wrapped up 2013 by celebrating some significant accomplishments. We are proud to have more than tripled the number of participating schools between the spring and fall Fire Up Your Feet campaigns – and we couldn’t have done it without you!
One of our greatest inspirations came from Lakeside Middle School in Irvine, California, where PE teacher Jennifer Wong worked hard to get everyone involved in the Fire Up Your Feet October Fall Activity Challenge. School staff and students practiced hard for their yearly 1.25 mile Red Ribbon Run, which was scheduled during the Fall Challenge, and they utilized the Fire Up Your Feet tracker to log their weekly activity leading up to the run. More than 690 students, family and staff ran or walked during the run, supported by more than 40 volunteers and many cheerleaders. Students who participated in the Run tracked their activity using the Fire Up Your Feet Activity Tracker – and those extra minutes added up to help Lakeside rise to the top of the competition in California.
This winning strategy won Lakeside California’s first place $5,000 award, which they will use to support students with the purchase of heart rate monitors and resistance bands, and to update Physical Education equipment, including items such as yoga mats, to help everyone be active even on rainy days! Congratulations again, Lakeside!
If your school could benefit from awards to begin a physical activity program or to purchase new equipment, this strategy is easily replicable! Whether families at your school are using the Fire Up Your Feet tracker to track for an existing event, or whether your school encourages families to use the tracker for other activities, like daily walking and biking to school, you can enjoy the benefits of staying healthy and active with Fire Up Your Feet while tracking activity to earn awards for your school to increase physical activity.
During the winter months we’ll continue working hard to improve our program to further increase the spirit of healthy competition for our upcoming 2014 Spring Challenge. Registration for the Spring Challenge has already begun – sign up today, stay tuned for updates, and keep walking!
