Social Media + PTA Involvement = A Winning Fire Up Your Feet Strategy!
A.L. Burruss Elementary is the winner of the 2015 National Recognition Award.
Heather Harris, the PTA Co-President at A. L. Burruss Elementary, a Title I school about 25 minutes northwest of Atlanta, GA, heard about Fire Up Your Feet from a Georgia PTA newsletter. As PTA Co-President, Heather is always on the lookout for opportunities to raise money. When she read that Fire Up Your Feet awards were available to help promote active students, she knew it was a great fit for the school.
During the month of October, students, families, and staff tracked their everyday activity, including recess, P.E. class and activities that took place outside of school. The school was already planning a trail walk to take place in mid-October, so Heather made sure that all the students who participated tracked their walking activity. Because many students didn’t have internet access at home, Harris customized paper trackers that students and teachers could use and then turn in to Heather so she could enter the activity online.
Heather also used social media to make it easier for parents and students to track activity. Any parent could leave a comment or message on the Facebook page describing their activity, and Heather would enter it online. Heather also created two different promotional displays – one for students and one for staff – to display in the hallways at school to remind students and staff about the Challenge.
Heather’s efforts combined with students’ enthusiasm for being physically active paid off when Burruss took home the Ready, Set, Go! breakout award during the Challenge. “The P.E. teacher plans to purchase new physical activity equipment with the prize money,” said Heather.
“We’re on a roll with Fire Up Your Feet, so we’re going to keep it going even though the Challenge is over!” said Heather. Many students are planning to participate in an upcoming 5k race where the school with the most participants wins a prize. Heather says the school is definitely planning to participate in the Spring Fire Up Your Feet Challenge next May, and she’s already starting to plan ideas to get even more people involved.
Go A. L. Burruss!
