The 3 C's of getting 'Fired Up' at Hosford Middle School
Getting families Fired Up at Hosford Middle School takes Creativity, Cross-promotion and Commitment.
As Hosford's self-described 'Tech Guy', Fire Up Your Feet Coordinator Luke Wisher is committed to giving students a fresh look at the way technology can intersect with building a healthier community. At Hosford, Wisher teamed up with the school wellness program to promote the Fall Challenge. Each wellness student was given a Fire Up Your Feet handout to take home and share with their family. Once a parent registered and added their child, students were able to go online and use the Fire Up Your Feet Activity Tracker to track activities they recorded in their planner for that week. Parents could also track activity for themselves and their children at home.
Wisher’s best advice to helping get the message out is to cross-promote. In Oregon, Fire Up Your Feet cross-promotes with the statewide Walk+Bike Challenge. "Whether it is coordinating with a statewide effort or an existinng school based challenge – it really helps to bring partners together to crosspromote." Hosford continues to sustain momentum by using the school listserve and social media to communicate with parents and staff.
“Motivate teachers and families to help you by showing them how awards will be used and team up with a current program to show students what you are doing. Be sure to thank everyone for participating and supporting your school!” said Wisher. Spreading the word about Fire Up Your Feet has also opened the door for involvement among local Portland celebrities like Timber Joey (pictured above).
Thanks to the support of Fire Up Your Feet friends like Luke Wisher, Hosford has won three Breakout Challenge awards this fall! Congratulations Hosford. We salute you and all of our participating schools for your continued efforts help students be healthy, active and feel good about Firing Up their Feet!
