Walk. Bike. Do Better.
This October, students, parents and community members across the country are fired up for walking, bicycling, and finding ways to stay physically active together - because active kids do better.
As advocates dedicated to the Safe Routes to School cause, we all agree that building a movement requires many different strategies and approaches. Fire Up Your Feet, a core program of Safe Routes to School National Partnership, made possible in partnership with Kaiser Permanente and the National PTA, offers a new approach to celebrating walking, rolling and getting active before, during and after the school day.
With almost 30 percent of Fire Up Your Feet participants coming from local PTAs, the Fire Up Your Feet Fall Activity Challenge offers one more way to help grow your local family of Safe Routes to School supporters, including County and State Departments of Education.
We appreciate the hard work you are doing to promote Safe Routes to School and imagine you have already experienced the challenge of finding funding sources to sustain monthly incentives for your Walking Wednesdays, purchase safety vests for Walking School Bus captains, purchase sorely needed bike racks or all three! With over $50,000 in awards being offered to participating states and regions, Fire Up Your Feet can offer an easy win to help enhance Safe Routes to School programming and help sustain walking and rolling, year-round.
Should your school win an award, your efforts to help connect them with resources that truly make a difference in the lives of their students will be rewarded with a generous amount of positive attention toward your Safe Routes to School program.
The 2013 Fall Activity Challenge is currently underway in the Atlanta area, Baltimore area, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, Northeast Ohio, Oregon, Southwest Washington, Wisconsin, and the Greater Washington, DC area. Parents, students and staff in these states and regions are welcome to register for the Fall Activity Challenge anytime through the month of October and still compete on equal footing, since they only need to log one activity, one time per week from the time they register.
If you’re looking for a way to engage new partners, provide a huge value-added to your organization at no cost, help acquaint new schools with Safe Routes to School and provide an extra push for schools that support walking and bicycling but could benefit from the added spark of offering a potential award, please consider helping one or more schools in your community get Fired Up!
Registration takes one minute and parents can register using smartphones, school or home computers.
