Walking School Bus Gives Kids Exercise, Safety
At Cypress Elementary School in Redding, California, the walking school bus picks kids up every day of the week! As the Redding Record Searchlight reports, the walking school bus follows a 3/4 mile route to school, and has about 15 to 20 kids participating on a typical day. The record number is 28 students in a day.
Third-grader Majexistique said she likes the walking school bus. “We get exercise instead of just being lazy,” she said. “We get to see our friends. We get to talk and see how they are doing.”
The walking school bus is a partnership between Healthy Shasta's Safe Routes to School program and the Healthy Students Initiative. The program is supported with $4,000 in funding from the initiative, which covers a stipend for two staff members to accompany the walking school bus and prizes for the participants.
